What Does a Systems Engineer Do?

As a Systems Engineer at High Touch, Josh plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the infrastructure that powers our clients’ businesses. From servers to networks to cloud environments, he ensures each system is secure, reliable, and optimized for top-tier performance.

“My role is really about building trust,” he explains. “I work closely with clients to understand their needs and deliver solutions that align with their business goals. Sometimes, that means deploying new technologies or responding to incidents. Other times, it’s about planning strategic upgrades and ensuring long-term success.”

Whether it’s resolving a complex issue or rolling out a new system, Josh’s focus never wavers: dependable IT support that helps deliver strategic value for High Touch’s clients.

Finding Fulfillment

Ask Josh to pick a favorite project, and you won’t get a specific answer—that’s because, for him, the magic lies in the nature of project work.

“Each project presents a new challenge and an opportunity to make a real impact,” he shares. “What I really enjoy is being able to deliver solutions that not only meet our clients’ business needs but also give them peace of mind. That sense of contributing to their success is what makes the work meaningful to me.”

From the Military to Managed IT Services

Josh’s career path didn’t follow a straight line, but every step was intentional. A lifelong interest in technology and computers set the stage early on, but it wasn’t until his military service ended that the next step became clear.

“When it came time for my discharge from the military, I realized I hadn’t yet mapped out a clear plan for transitioning into civilian life,” Josh recalls. “After discussing a few options with my wife, I decided to use my GI Bill to earn a degree in network support and administration.”

That decision ultimately led him to High Touch and a career that provided the stability, challenge, and long-term growth he was seeking. “The tech industry has an ongoing demand. I knew I wanted to be in a field that evolves but still offers security, and technology checked all those boxes.”

Building Trusting Client Relationships

For Josh, technical expertise is just one side of the coin. What really sets him apart is his ability to build relationships while making technology feel accessible rather than intimidating.

“I bring the human touch to technology by valuing relationships as much as technical solutions,” he says. “Rather than just implementing systems, I take the time to understand each client’s unique goals and challenges.”

That thoughtful, client-centered approach is part of what makes High Touch’s managed IT services so effective. We don’t just offer infrastructure—we offer partnership.

“I try to translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical guidance. My goal is to be a reliable, approachable partner that clients can count on, not just to solve problems, but to help them feel informed, supported, and confident in their technology decisions.”

8 Things You Might Not Know About Josh Watkins

As part of our Employee Spotlight interview, we ask a series of lighthearted questions to highlight the unique, diverse personalities that make our High Touch team great. Josh keeps business networks running strong by day, but come Sunday, you might find this metal-loving, banjo-playing Systems Engineer troubleshooting chords instead of cloud infrastructure.

1.    What’s one quirky thing people don’t know about you?

I’m a full-blown metalhead who plays banjo in my church band.

2.    Is a hot dog a sandwich?

I’m not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole, but my answer is no.

3.    Who or where would you haunt if you were a ghost?

Anyone who ever tried to hold me back or tell me I couldn’t do something.

4.    What was your first job?

My first job was at 15, working as a stocker and bagger at a small-town grocery store. But, the first adult job I’m most proud of is enlisting in the United States Coast Guard, where I served for 13 years.

5.    Does a cyclops wink or blink?

Both. A wink is a blink, and a blink is a wink.

6.    Do you have any pets or kids?

My wife and I have two daughters and a giant schnoodle named Ozzy.

7.    Do you do any volunteer or community service work?

I have served as a deacon at my church for many years, and I also volunteer my technical expertise to support their network and weekly live stream of services.

8.    Would you rather go 30 days without your phone, or three months with no dessert?

I would definitely prefer to go 30 days without my phone. Having grown up in the 80’s and 90’s, I actually miss the days when we weren’t constantly connected.
