Wichita, Kan. — (June 26, 2023) — High Touch Technologies is thrilled to have had the privilege of hosting a group of high school students as part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas Club 2 Careers Program.
This remarkable summer initiative aims to provide young individuals with hands-on experiences that help them explore various career paths in the Wichita area. As a proud sponsor of the 2023 program, we were excited to share insights into the world of cybersecurity, its importance in our digital age, and fascinating career paths for those interested in a future in cybersecurity.
Learning the Cybersecurity Basics
In a world where being online 24/7 is the norm, it’s crucial for young adults to understand the risks that come with it—that’s why Jason Fenoglio, Cybersecurity Practice Manager at High Touch, took the stage and dove into the basics of cybersecurity.
With his expertise, Jason highlighted why cybersecurity matters and emphasized the importance of taking a multilayered approach to protect our digital lives.
Jason used the illustrative “Swiss cheese” analogy to explain the concept of cybersecurity by emphasizing that relying on a single layer of defense is like depending on a single slice of cheese with holes. To achieve adequate security, we need multiple layers working together to create a solid defense solution with minimal holes.
As the session continued, Jason introduced the attendees to common cyberattacks, such as malware and phishing. Through interactive trivia questions and engaging breaks, everyone was encouraged to actively participate and keep the cybersecurity conversation alive.
“We also provided practical tips and best practices for passwords to ensure everyone left the event equipped with the knowledge to safeguard themselves online,” states Jason. “These students will likely use usernames and passwords for everything they do for the rest of their lives. It’s important that they understand the importance of strong, unique passwords and gain insights into protecting their online identities.”
Investigating Future Cybersecurity Careers
An emerging industry, cybersecurity is a promising career path for students interested in technology.
Jason took the opportunity to highlight various cybersecurity roles, inspiring the students to consider them as future career options. From Cybersecurity Analyst/Engineer to Security Consultant, Incident Responder, and Ethical Hacker, the diverse range of cybersecurity careers provided an exciting glimpse into the possibilities that lie ahead.
As the session drew to a close, Jason shared valuable information about cybersecurity education. He discussed top schools and institutions that offer cybersecurity programs, along with free and discounted resources for those eager to deepen their knowledge in this field. By showcasing these resources, High Touch aims to empower young minds and provide them with avenues to pursue their passion for cybersecurity.
