Opening the Door to Technology Careers

Wichita, Kan.—(June 12, 2025)— At High Touch Technologies, we believe in investing in the future—of technology, of business, and very importantly, of people.

Recently, we had the opportunity to welcome students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas (BGCSCK) as part of the organization’s Club2Career program. This innovative initiative connects local youth with real-world career experiences, helping them explore pathways they may not have considered otherwise.

Heath Howard, Director of Development at High Touch Technologies, speaks to Club2Career students about software development and programming careers during a hands-on tech workshop in Wichita, Kansas.

Supporting Career Exploration

The Club2Career program, a collaboration between BGCSCK and Khan Lab School of Wichita, offers 6th–12th grade students a unique summer experience. Through weekly workplace field trips and hands-on activities, participants learn directly from professionals in industries across Wichita. Participation is by invitation, with a focus on helping students build confidence, career readiness, and essential life skills.

High Touch was proud to be one of the featured companies in this year’s program.

What Does a Software Developer Do?

During their visit, students heard from Heath Howard, Director of Development at High Touch. With years of software engineering experience and a passion for mentoring, Heath offered an inside look at what it means to build a career in programming and technology.

His presentation covered everything from the basics of how websites work to the tools professional developers use daily, including HTML, CSS, Python, Visual Studio Code, and GitHub. But this wasn’t a dry, technical lecture—Heath used relatable examples and analogies to show that software development is more than just typing code; it’s a creative, problem-solving career that’s accessible to anyone willing to learn.

Making Sense of Modern Tech

In addition to covering coding basics, Heath also walked students through the operations of modern tech teams. He introduced Agile methodology, daily standups, and the importance of communication and collaboration in the development process. Students got to see how ideas turn into real software products and how each team member plays a unique role in bringing those ideas to life.

Heath also touched on artificial intelligence (AI), a rapidly evolving area in tech. Rather than presenting AI as intimidating or mysterious, he focused on how students can work alongside AI as a tool to solve problems, test ideas, and innovate in new ways.

For many attendees, it was their first glimpse into how the apps, websites, and technology they use every day actually come together behind the scenes.

Building a Game Together

The highlight of the day? Rolling up sleeves and building a web game together.

Rather than just talking about programming, Heath invited the Club2Career students to participate in a live coding session where they built a simple browser-based game from scratch.

As the students brainstormed ideas, suggested tweaks, and watched their code come to life, they experienced firsthand how software development isn’t just about computers—it’s about creativity, problem-solving, and working as a team.

This hands-on activity provided students with a unique glimpse into the real-world development process, demonstrating how even the most basic lines of code can evolve into something fun and functional. More importantly, it helped demystify programming, making it feel less intimidating and a lot more achievable.
